Program Goals

Versatility has always been one of the defining characteristics of the American Bulldog, and preserving that versatility is a primary goal of my breeding program. I strive to produce dogs that are structurally sound, mentally stable, and capable of excelling in protection sports, performance events, farm and ranch work, and as trusted family guardians.

Common Breed Traits and History

American Bulldogs are a working breed originally developed to perform a wide range of tasks including home and family guardian, protection, farm utility work, and catching feral hogs. These roles required great strength, persistence, and courage.

I strive to preserve the traditional qualities with focus on the family guardian, protection, and farm utility traits.

Dogs from my program can be expected to have:

A range of working drives from medium to high
Guardian instinct and territorial awareness
A range of energy level from medium to high

These traits will vary depending on the litter and individual puppy/dog

What is a Guardian Breed?

Guardian breeds are naturally aware, observant dogs with strong territorial awareness and protective instincts. Their job is to alert to unfamiliar people or animals and when necessary, potentially defend their home, family, or property.

They are great family dogs, but are not passive companions. They require structure, training, and responsible ownership.

Are American Bulldogs Aggressive?

American Bulldogs are a guardian breed, and some can have strong protective instincts toward their family and home. That does not mean they should be biting people willy-nilly or looking for trouble!

Like any dog, they need appropriate training, exercise, guidance and fulfillment. A dog that is bored, frustrated, lacks exercise, given no boundaries etc. can develop problematic and unwanted behavior.

A well raised American Bulldog is a stable, clear headed dog that is a joy to live with.

Are Your Dogs Social?

Social behavior varies within each litter and between individual breedings. Some dogs may be more outgoing while others may be indifferent toward unfamiliar people.

American Bulldogs are not Labradors. They should not be aggressive, but may prefer the affection and attention of their own people rather than from a stranger. In public, many are content to ignore people they do not know but many will also be more outgoing and accept pets from friendly strangers.

Early socialization can increase social behavior and is recommended for all our puppies once they go home.

Can I Take My American Bulldog to the Dog Park?

I don’t breed dog aggressive dogs, but they are still not “dog park” dogs. Free play with unfamiliar dogs is not recommended with an adult American Bulldog.

American Bulldogs are selective with strange dogs rather than social or playful with everyone. This shows strongly at maturity and while puppies might be playful, their behavior can change once they are adults.

They have a very pushy and physical style of play that is often offensive to other more sensitive breeds which can lead to a fight.

What is it Like to Live With an American Bulldog?

They are affectionate, silly, and extremely loyal. They bond closely with their people and want to be involved in every activity.

American Bulldogs are a very physical breed often referred to as Crash Test Dummies for their exuberant antics. They have tons of personality and are fun, entertaining dogs.

They have medium to high energy but also a reliable off switch when their needs are met. With structure and daily exercise, they are calm in the home.

Are American Bulldogs Good Family Dogs?

Yes! These dogs are loyal, affectionate, silly, and deeply bonded to their families.

They are best suited for active homes that understand large guardian breeds and are committed to training and providing daily exercise.

They are highly rewarding companions that love their family.

Do Your Dogs Live in Kennels?

No. Despite the name, Ferocia Kennels dogs are raised in the house and are part of everyday family life. All the dogs are crate and kennel trained, and they spend time in outdoor runs as part of their training, but no Ferocia dog lives exclusively outdoors or in a kennel.

They are working dogs, but they are also family members. Some of my dogs even sleep in bed with me every night.

What is Prey Drive?

Prey drive is the natural instinct to notice, chase, and catch animals that trigger predatory behavior. Squirrels, rabbits, cats, deer, livestock etc. It can also be directed at fast moving objects and toys.

Prey drive does not mean a dog is unstable or unsafe with other animals, but early socialization and training is required to ensure control. It can be a useful tool while training with toys, to use as rewards.

Can They Live With Other Animals?

Yes, many Ferocia Bulldogs live safely with cats, livestock, and other household animals.

When puppies are raised with livestock or other animals, the dog learns appropriate behavior around other pets through training and exposure.

American Bulldogs are especially good at learning who/what is part of the family and who/what is not. So your tabby cat is part of the family but the feral tomcat that hopped the fence is NOT.

Why is Training So Important?

Dogs are not born understanding our rules or expectations. They need to be taught what is expected of them and what behaviors are appropriate.

American Bulldogs are intelligent, powerful dogs that love to learn. Ferocia dogs are bred to be trainable and have a desire to please.

You don’t have to be a professional trainer to own an American Bulldog but you do need to be willing to put in some time and effort to train.

The Purpose of This Page

I talk about guardian traits, prey drive, training, exercise and behavior because I want people to understand that dogs are animals with natural instincts and behaviors that don’t always fit neatly into our human world.

It has become common for people to expect a dog to simply know how to behave without putting any time or effort into teaching them. When the dog develops behaviors they don’t like due to lack of training and fulfillment, the dog is often already set in these unwanted behavior patterns. Retraining is far more difficult than when the dog learns and is trained from puppyhood. This goes for ALL dogs, not just American Bulldogs.

American Bulldogs are not difficult dogs, and they are certainly not impossible dogs. But they do require training, exercise, guidance and fulfillment.

When we understand what dogs actually need and take responsibility for providing it, we give them the best chance to be the dogs we want them to be.

And when you do that, there is no better dog than an American Bulldog.
